Art and literature: A master bedroom suite at The Laslett
Who’s behind it: The Laslett is the newest member of Tracy Lowy’s Living Rooms group – a collection of four smart and chic boutique properties in Central London.
Located in W11, this 51-room hotel is a short walk from Portobello Market with nods to the neighbourhood’s cultural heritage realised by architectural and interior designers Waldo Works.
The look: Sprawled across five interconnecting Victorian townhouses on Pembridge Gardens, The Laslett fulfills Living Rooms’ ethos of combining the luxury and service of a hotel with the feeling and comfort of home. Think modernist furnishings peppered with locally-sourced art and antiques.
The hotel is named after Rhaune Laslett, whose Notting Hill Street Festival evolved into the legendary carnival we love today while The Henderson bar is a tribute to Russ Henderson, the Trinidad-born musician who played at the first Festival 1965. The house cocktail is a rum punch – a favourite of the steel band king and carnival staple.
Which room should I go for: The eight master bedroom suites range from 323-367 sq ft and include a bathroom with a walk-in shower and tub. All of the stylish rooms feature stacks of Penguin classics, pieces from British design houses such as Pinch and Race furniture and curated art from local artists including Barbara Hulanicki, Toby Mott and Brian David Stevens, whose photographs of Notting Hill carnival sound systems add a an unusual touch. The bathrooms include full size Neal’s Yard products, while Living Rooms’ ‘Big Bar’ concept includes Gin and Vodka from independent distillers Sipsmith.
Breakfast at The Laslett
Where should I eat? With no formal dining area, guests can take lunch or dinner at the Henderson Bar, lounge or library .
The Henderson Bar menu features dishes and bakery items supplied by Sally Clarke; the first time her dishes have been available outside her much-loved Clarke’s restaurant, bakery and shop on nearby Kensington Church Street. Her pastries fly off the shelves at breakfast and afternoon tea, while the Avocado, Chilli, Lime on Wholemeal Rye is a morning favourite.
