London weather: Snow forecast for the capital this weekend

Snow is forecast for London this weekend

Drivers are warned of icy road conditions and many councils will be sending out the gritters. Chris Hogan, from MeteoGroup, said: “Early on Saturday, you’re looking at temperatures pretty much near zero or one across the whole country – particularly in the east, the east will be the coldest. In the south, everyone’s going to notice how cold it is with a chance, anywhere in the east, of maybe a few flakes of wintry stuff falling.” The cold snap will last into Sunday, however the winds will become westerly from the beginning of next week and things should become more bearable. Mr Hogan added: “This cold snap is probably not going to last too long, but obviously it’s late November – it’s not like it’s going to become tropical.” There will be a drop-off in minimum temps of up to five degrees. Icy wind gusts of 60-70mph will whip much of central and southern Britain from this evening, making things noticeably colder. The Met Office said: “Please be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and possible travel disruption.” Gritters will be out in force this weekend as a cold snap takes hold of Britain, councils say. More than 80 per cent of councils have already placed grit bins for residents to use and the gritting fleets for most areas are armed with state-of-the-art GPS technology. Cllr Peter Box, the LGA environment spokesman, said councils would constantly monitor weather reports to stay one step ahead of the icy conditions. But he warned: “Council staff can’t be everywhere. They rely on community-spirited residents to look out for each other.” Mr Box encouraged residents to conduct welfare checks on elderly neighbours. He said: “They may just need an extra blanket getting down from the loft or perhaps they didn’t get out to collect their medicine this week.” Mr Box added: “It takes no time to check in but could potentially save lives.”
